Florida Woman Finds Manatee in Her Backyard During Hurricane Dorian
"I thought, ‘Good, you just mowed my grass.’ It was pretty cool.”
Corrine Hogan was holed up in her home in Palm City, Florida, while Hurricane Dorian churned the waters of the nearby Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday.
She told the Miami Herald that she was just watching and waiting for news of the storm when she heard a large, splashing noise in her backyard.
“First, I thought it was an alligator. Then I looked out the window and saw it was a manatee,” Hogan recalled. “I was shocked.”
A clip she shared on Facebook shows the top of the sea cow as it moves slowly through the grass, happily chomping away at the vegetation.
“The tide is so high we actually have a manatee swimming in our backyard right now,” Hogan can be heard narrating the short video (above). “Wow, she’s a big girl!”
According to Hogan, the manatee munched for about a half an hour before swimming towards the St. Lucie River.
“We just let her exist in her own little world,” she told the Herald. “I thought, ‘Good, you just mowed my grass.’ It was pretty cool.”
